Gatsby Log

Pre reading

Part 1:

The pressure that occur around me is pressure to do well in school which is very overwhelming everyday. Each day that goes by my parents push me more and more to do better which causes stress because I don’t know if I can keep up with it everyday.

Part 2:

When a person is born to wealth they don’t really change unless they lose that wealth because then they go down to the same class as the average people. But for a person who won the lottery it is a dramatic change because they never had that much money for them selves so they want everything they never had so they start changing into the rich spoiled person that everyone sees rich people as.

Part 3:

A goal of mine is to go to UC Berkeley and graduate and major in law to become a lawyer. This goal is very important to me because it would set me up for life.

Chapter 1

Part 1:

Why doesn’t Nick go to Gatsby to introduce himself but wait so long?

-Just wasn’t time for it/ not really ever answered.

Is Nick afraid of going over because of the large house that Gatsby owns?

-No the house did not intimidate Nick.

Part 2:

My friend’s house has made a huge impression on me because when ever I visit I can’t believe how big it is and the idea of how expensive it was. Me being from a not as rich family makes me kinda envy him and his house.

Chapter 2

Part 1:

The scene in Tom’s new apartment is a very strong scene showing off how the rich lived then and how it compared to the poorer people of the time. The author included this scene because of the fact that it sets up the line of the rich and the not so rich.

Part 2:

Not as of now has there been any alteration of my thought of the characters through chapter 2 because it wasn’t focused on what I was wondering.

Part 3:

The passage from the book contributes to the theme of the individual and society by showing how people have different lives other then the ones they show. People hide private lives to keep to themselves and live by that on the inside.

Chapter 3

Part 1:

During the party there is much rumor about Gatsby at his own party going around that he did this or that. Also no one really knows Gatsby because of how he is never there to find. This could possibly make the Buchanan’s superior of his because Tom is known by everyone at the party and there is no rumors going on around him.

Part 2:

The legends about Gatsby that go around are:

-He shot a man

-spy during war

At the party no one really knows him well because he doesn’t really host he just makes the party and lets it run itself. He doesn’t socialize with the crowd to much.

Gatsby at this point looks very lost between all these people he doesn’t know and confused on what kind of person Gatsby is.

Part 3:

The purpose of the passage is to show that Nick was becoming more accustom to the life in New York, and he is enjoying himself.

Chapter 4

Part 1:

Gatsby from the Middle West from San Francisco

Was in the war and afterward he was able to attend Oxford with the benifits of being in the war.

His family died, he inherited money.

Was promoted any times before he went out to the actual battle field.

Part 2:

“I hadn’t the faintest idea what “this matter” was, but I was more annoyed than interested. I hadn’t asked Jordan to tea in order to discuss Mr. Jay Gatsby . I was sure the request would be something utterly fantastic, and for a moment I was sorry I’d ever set foot upon his overpopulated lawn.”

He doesn’t really care about his personal life because he doesn’t care about people’s affairs to much he tries to stay out of that.

Part 3:

Being an Oxford man was important to:

-Wolfsheim: very re-found, very well known among the world.

-Daisy: well educated

-Jordan: well educated

It’s important to all three because it makes him well educated and very well known.

Chapter 5

Part 1:

“I did, old sport,” he said automatically, “but I lost most of it in the big panic-the panic of the war.”

I think he hardly knew what he was saying, for when I asked him what business he was in he answered:”that’s my affair,”” before he realized that it wasn’t an appropriate reply.

Part 2:

The green dock on Daisy’s dock is a light that is always lit and seen across the two sides. The light signifies Gatsby’s desire for Daisy that’s why he always sees the light until Daisy with him then he didn’t see the light because he was already with him.

Part 3:

Gatsby was acting very unexpected as well as very shy around Daisy. He didn’t have much confidence as he always did. He also was very uncertain. I think he behaved like this due to the fact that he liked Daisy so much and was embarrassed.

Chapter 6

Part 1:

He was in the bonds business and tried to offer Nick some deal in to it.He doesn’t like giving out out much information out to the press.

Part 2:

Daisy is appalled by the West Egg because of meeting Gatsby . I think she will choose Gatsby because he is more shrewd to her.

Part 3:

Gatsby: Profound, well educated, well manared, mysterious

Diasy: sweet, lovable, bright, spontaneous, out going, rich.

Tom: built, rich, educated, well known

Chapter 7

Part 1:

The first day Gatsby it was a down poor but the next time he invites her it was a sunny and very hot morning. The weather in this maybe something to do with emotion like the rain signals the hard scared emotion and the sun is more let loose and happy. “The next day was broiling, almost the last, certainly the warmest, of the summer.”

Part 2:

For Tom his love life was very complex due to the fact that he has an affair. He had both Myrtle and Daisy to look after. It was never truly chosen by him on who he loved more but it made his love life that much complex leading it to losing both of them.

For Gatsby his jealousy of Tom being able to spend so much time with Daisy his love was so much that he could not stand it any more and made a choice to come forth and take her back and hope to live a love life with Daisy.

For Myrtle her love for Tom was deep and when she saw the car coming thinking that it was him coming back to her she ran out to greet him only to find her life swiftly taken by the car crash.

Part 3:

Gatsby owns “drug-stores”

His hidden life is very deep as found by Tom.

All this affects Daisy’s opinion of Gatsby very little. This is because she is madly in love with him and wants to keep it that way.

Chapter 8

Part 1:

This author added George Wilson’s last night because it was not to clear on how George would have gone on with life would have have moved any way or something else. My opinion on George Wilson is that he is just out of character he’s to plain nothing to him.

Part 2:

The eyes may signify “god” because of the far outlook that they pose. They look out at all the people coming by and stares straight at them.

Part 3:

When Nick first said he’s worth the whole damn bunch it was more of being polite I think. But when he disapproves of him he’s comes out to be honest with him. THis being very contradictory as he goes from side to side. Nicks opinion changed from just being polite to being straight up honest even if it hurts.

Chapter 9

Part 1:

Gatsby was friendless because of his mysterious private life and his past. This was a main reason as to why Gatsby was friendless even if he really wanted to have friend, his shady past and present prevented that because he didn’t want others tied to him.

Part 2:

The meaning of this is that at first the East was very lively due to the fact that gatsby’s party was always going on and it was very lively around. But after his death nothing was alive any more, nothing was moving everything was still and grey.

Part 3:

I do not believe Tom was the direct murderer. But I do strongly believe that he assisted in a very powerful way to the real murderer. He told Mr. Wilson that Gatsby was the man that ran over his wife. This filling Wilson with anger and revenge drove him to kill him. But Tom might as well have been the killer because he possible told WIlson who it was in revenge of Gatsby taking Daisy away from him. My opinion isn’t affected to much and as for my thought on the novel it is still the same with the very stong idea of it being a great novel and all.

Post Reading

Part 1

Rising action: Nick Carraway meets Jay Gatsby at his mansion during one of the parties that he throws. Nick and Gatsby get intellectually close to one another in a sense that they begin to chill, or else spend time with one another. Jay Gatsby then goes on to ask Nick whether or not he can arrange a meeting with himself and Daisy.

Climax: Tom realizes that Gatsby is in love with his wife Daisy, and becomes weary of it. He gets upset and asserts that he and Daisy have a relationship that goes so far back and to a depth that Gatsby would never fathom. Tom’s other lover is struck and killed by Daisy while she is driving in her car. Gatsby is killed by Wilson.

Falling Action: Nick Carraway arranges a funeral for Gatsby who was shot by Tom while at his house sun bathing in his pool. Nick ends his relationship with Jordan.

The advantages of writing a book in this manner is simply because of how easily it can grasp a person and pull one in to want to know more till the end.

Part 2

“I looked at MIss Baker, wondering what ist was she “got done.” I enjoyed looking at her. SHe was a slender, small-breasted girl, with an erect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward at the shoulders like a young cadet. Her gray sun-strained eyes looked back at me with polite reciprocal curiosity out of a wan, charming, discontented face. It occurred to me now that I had seen her, or a picture of her, somewhere before.”(pg 11)

(my part)

As of that moment I remembered her from the previous party I was at. There she was radiating her beauty all over the room were everything was festive. I couldn’t get the courage back then to go up to her and ask her to dance with me. Hell I couldn’t do anything, all I could do was to stare in a deep trance at her and admire her beauty. This time I was confident in my self remembering her and my love for her I walked up to her and asked her is she knew me. She responded “yes.” My heart lit up and My love sparked in the air for her. As of that day we were bound together by a strong love that could not be described by words.

Part 3:

ESSAY???

Part 4:

“well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money. It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing.” (pg 83)

In this the theme of self reliance is very strong and being depended on yourself. This quote shows how Nick refuses Gatsby’s help because he doesn’t want to get tangled with it.

Part 5:

THe effects of society changes the person... well the person changes toward society because they don’t want to be outcasts. Individuals have huge effects on others because they are one of the people that play parts in daily life so you get accustom to them and become more like them.

Part 6:

I believe the author chose this approach to let the readers feel like they really are in the book and let them see through the eyes of a character that is there and what he experiences. Nick plays the friend of Gatsby and Tom, allowing him to see both sides of the ending problem. No I don’t believe it limits as much because we get to see and read the feeling not just what’s going on.

Part 7:

As a result of this log i learned:

Not everything is always good

its not a good idea to get into people affairs because it could lead to bad things.

My decision

My decision in life was in 8th grade when I had been a part of a incident which involved a prank on me to try and "pants" me. Just as the attempt was being made a staff was walking by and no one noticed so we all got caught. The punishment was a referral and suspended for 1 day. I couldn't be suspended, my parents don't like me in trouble and I know the consequences of being suspended at my house. So I had to choose to lie so I get in trouble or tell the truth and have my friend in trouble. My decision was to tell the truth because the punishment from home would be worse.

Rebuttal to Mark Twain

Mark Twain says humans are below the common animal. But how can a man be below a animal when animal can just do simple things to survive. Humans can do that too but we can also help others unlike some animals. He states that hunting was a sport, but I say how is it sport when you hunting for food. Animals also hunt for food and we can't really know if it is for sport or just what it really is because we can only imagine.

Roughing It by Mark Twain age 37, 1872

In the story Roughing It , it talks about Mr. Young who is a man with many wives. He gave one of his wives(#6) a breast pin, which then made the rest of the wives want one too. So there began the problem for him when each wive comes in and asks for one as he is having a conversation with Mr. Johnson. It also talking about the Goshute Indians and how inferior they are to everything. Finally he writes about the CHinese on how harmless they are on the Pacific coast.

The satire I've noticed was when he says he will buy his wives(all) the breast pins just go get them away.
